Did you know the modern day Santa was shaped by these advertisements? The red coat, beard and jolly belly- all became the norm because of these widely seen illustrations.

Another holiday icon we own to merchandising is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. He was a creation of a Montgomery Ward copywriter, Robert L. May. (full story) He was asked to create a story to go in the coloring books they gave away at Christmas in 1939. The song came along a few years later, written by May’s brother-in-law, Johnny Marks.
